Onboard Activities Dive Into Fun Onboard Activities

When you’re ready to soak up the sun, find a lounge chair at the adults-only pool deck or splash down on one of the slides at WaterWorks. During my recent sailing, I found all the Carnival classics, like the Alchemy Bar and Guy’s Burger Joint, a thrilling ropes course, dive-in movies, and plenty of themed deck parties. Rent cabanas or lounge in the ocean-view whirlpools at Loft 19, where attentive staff take care of everything, like delivering you fruit and chilled towels. My favorite spot to hang out was the aft Patio Pool because it wasn't ever super crowded, and the view of the ocean was unmatched.

Tweens and Teens on Carnival Celebration: Circle C and Club 02

There is plenty to do on this ship at all times of day but at night, the fun factor accelerates. From the buzz of the Gateway and 820 Biscayne zones to Celebration Central with its shops, bars and restaurants and the dramatically lit, balmy deck and pool areas, just being on board is truly like a night out on the town. Around the ship, you’ll find spaces like Phantom Lounge and Dr. Frankenstein’s Lab, where you can see shows or dance the night away.

Deluxe Ocean View (Obstructed View)

The third and fourth quarters occur in the Summer Landing zone; passengers can rope hay bales, participate in a hot wing-eating contest at Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse and follow it up with music from a live band. Camp Ocean also has an interactive space wall, where astronauts lead kids on virtual expeditions, complete with a ceiling that lights up like the night sky to show the constellations. The menu has several types of meat — including steak, of course, as well as lamb chops and chicken — and seafood items like fish and lobster tail. I went with a 9-ounce filet mignon, which was cooked to perfection.

Captain's Suite

An aerobics studio is located in the middle of the gym, closed off from the rest of the activity. Here, you can take any number of fitness classes, including the fun RYDE spinning class, that has passengers hooked up to heartrate monitors, competing against themselves and one another. If you're not a fan of spinning, you can try out classes like boot camp or Pilates. These classes all have fees, starting at $12 and going up from there. (We found the per-class price is actually cheaper than what we'd pay at a gym on land.) While signup isn't required, many classes sell out fast -- some on the first day you board. So, if taking a class is important, visit the fitness center when you first get onboard.

I sailed the Carnival Magic years ago, but I vividly remember spending an entire day enjoying the amenities at the Cloud 9 Spa and eating at the Mongolian Wok quick-service restaurant almost every afternoon for lunch. Carnival Sunrise  (formerly Carnival Triumph) features an exciting splash zone for kids and a piano bar where adults can sing along to their favorite songs all night. The ship sails on two to five-night and six to nine-night cruises from Miami, Florida, to the Bahamas. Carnival Mardi Gras is a nod to Carnival’s first ship, also named Mardi Gras, which was launched in 1972. The vessel has six onboard zones where families can have fun together, including the Ultimate Playground, where BOLT and the SportsSquare are located. Of course, there’s no Mardi Gras without New Orleans, so the French Quarter zone is where you’ll find Big Easy-inspired amenities like an Emeril Lagasse restaurant.

Staterooms

Pool lifts accommodating up to 300 pounds are available for passengers with limited mobility. If you show up during "Soundwaves Jukebox," you'll see synthesizer-like graphics pulsating to the music on the giant screens above the space. Carnival Jubilee offers a full roundup of daily activities on each voyage. I'm not a huge drinker, so I didn't personally try cocktails from the Center Stage Bar (Deck 6) or Grand View Bar (Deck 7) in Grand Central. The former features a bit of a retro vibe, and the latter is backed by a giant light-up wall that looks like wave. Unique to Carnival Jubilee are two new bars in the Deck 6 Currents zone.

Ships

I also didn't like the "SNOOZIN'" door hangers, which often got caught in my door when I closed it; I would've rathered a "do not disturb" button like many other new ships have. Suites in all three of these special accommodation types also give passengers the suite perks mentioned above. Oddly, there were some discrepancies on board that I was surprised to see on a ship that's been sailing for several months.

Bookville is packed with multiple copies of every title from Dr. Seuss, and it's decorated with bright colors and large murals of the author's most-famous characters. Seating is on chairs and beanbags and ottomans of every size and shape. It's not uncommon to find parents reading to their children from The Lorax or Fox in Socks, here, or during hosted story time. Self-service laundry facilities are located on several decks throughout the ship. Bring along quarters -- or get them from guest services -- as washers and dryers only take change.

The ship sails around the Bahamas, Caribbean, and more on two to 10-day itineraries. Carnival Valor is almost 20 years old and still showing cruisers a good time. The ship's home ports are New Orleans, Louisiana, and Barcelona, Spain, and it offers two to over 10-night sailings. Don’t miss the epic Seaday Brunch, where you'll find all kinds of treats like huevos rancheros, french toast, loaded burgers, and chicken and waffles. Aft-View Extended Balcony staterooms feature a larger balcony for more lounge-around room, more kick-back space...

If a massage or a facial isn’t your thing, you’ll definitely want to check out the Thermal Suite at the Cloud 9 Spa. This specially designed relaxation area has been developed to provide you with the perfect temperature, from dry heat to soothing moisture. With this spectacular variety of environments to suit your needs, you’ll find the ultimate in comfort like never before. Each of our ships is a unique experience — check the features and find out which ship is right for you. Enjoy more than just a shot of nostalgia for the early days of Carnival in this spot, made of equal measures of flavor, fun and entertainment.

It also serves as an access point for the onboard shops, Piano Bar 88, The Punchliner Comedy Club and the Jubilee Casino. The vessel offers weeklong Caribbean voyages on a regular rotation from its home port in Galveston, Texas, meaning you'll find a healthy dose of Texas-style fun on board (more on that later). In fact, Carnival is so dedicated to keeping the ship in the Lone Star State that it had a Texas star painted on the ship's hull. Virtually any kind of drink is available here, including, of course, mojitos and Cuba libres. Circle C activities may include dodge ball, bean bag tosses, books, board games, cards, scavenger hunts, movies, karaoke, video gaming and other themed activities. Carnival Celebration has an excellent gym with a line up of LifeFitness cardio machines (treadmills and ellipticals) that face the sea through full-length windows on port Deck 6.

Carnival Conquest takes cruisers to the Bahamas and the Caribbean on two to 10-day sailings. Special programs allow kids to see their favorite Dr. Seuss characters at sea, and adults can enjoy the enticing Alchemy Bar for one-of-a-kind cocktails. Sailings range from two to nine days out of Port Canaveral, so you can get a taste of what a cruise is like without committing to a more traditional weeklong sailing. Expect an onboard brewery, incredible restaurants, and family-friendly fun. As you step into a Junior Suite aboard Carnival Glory, you can't help but feel that you're stepping into full-size luxury in a smaller package.
